Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation is a particular component of Eastern-style meditation. Although many people find that this type of meditation calms physical symptoms of illnesses, this relief is only temporary. To truly root out the source of any physical stress or discomfort, you must attack the source of the problem.
The meditation style called "Be Still and Know" is a way to do this. This form of meditation, developed and taught by Roy Masters, helps you to shift your mind from merely thinking about your life to having a complete, balanced awareness of it. When you do this, the negative thoughts that cause your stress won't be able to harm you any further.
Oftentimes, we try to suppress our negative thoughts and push them below the surface of our consciousness. We may feel that these thoughts do us no credit or that we'll only sink into depression or despair if we give into them. By denying them, however, they get stronger. What we need to do instead is observe these thoughts and rise above them, taking away their power and rising above the pain that people or situations may bring to us. Through meditation, you can achieve the mental strength and clarity it takes to live a life of grace and happiness.
If you're new to meditation, it can be quite useful to learn using an audio tape or by practicing with someone who has experienced the process. At the Foundation of Human Understanding, we offer meditation tools to help you get started that you can use for the rest of your life.
