Healing Meditations
It's an accepted medical fact that stress is a contributing factor in many mental, emotional and physical disorders. Stress, in any of its many forms, activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers the release of adrenaline and other hormones. Blood is immediately diverted to the large muscles, an instinctive response resulting from the evolutionary imperative to "fight or flight."
In today's society, most people are in a constant state of stress to a greater or lesser degree. When the blood flow in the body is continually disrupted, the organs function poorly and the body is less able to heal itself. The more obvious symptoms of stress include insomnia, depression, high blood pressure, headaches and backaches, but stress is considered to be a factor in other maladies as well, including coronary disease, asthma, diabetes, auto-immune disorders and even cancer.
"Be Still and Know," a meditation technique developed by Roy Masters of the Foundation of Human Understanding, has been used for almost 50 years to help people cope with the stressors of everyday life. While meditation can not be considered a treatment for a disease, symptoms caused by stress can be alleviated with this method.
Unlike traditional meditation, this is not a form of self-hypnosis, nor is it "positive thinking." Masters guides you to detach from negative emotions, not deny them or repress them. This objectivity brings an almost instantaneous reduction in stress. You can download Roy's guide from the FHU website, or purchase it in audiotape or CD format.
