An Easter Meditation
Easter is an appropriate time to meditate on humility. Most of the problems people experience in life are really just the result of their own egos, with their petty demands and grievances. How can we cling to our paltry pride when we realize that Christ was humble enough to sacrifice himself, in the humiliating manner reserved for thieves and common criminals, so that we could free ourselves from sin?
Though concepts such as pride and humility are irrelevant when contemplating God, one could say that God himself was free from pride when he gave us His Son. In the face of that great humility and sacrifice, who are we to cling to our overweening emotions and swollen egos?
Freeing ourselves from pride and ego is easier than it may seem. One very useful tool is the Christian meditation technique, "Be Still and Know." Developed nearly 50 years ago by Roy Masters, head of the Foundation of Human Understanding, "Be Still and Know" offers us a guided exercise that can help us reach a selfless state of grace.
Ego is an artificial construct, having little to do with our true identities. Ego is built up of emotions and need; it takes, and never gives without the expectation of some reward. "Be Still and Know" will help you understand those needs and emotions and learn where they come from. Mostly, they are instilled in us early in life and are not part of our true selves at all. Once you understand where these needs and emotions come from, they will simply fade away, leaving you as God intended, humble and free.
